"感恩而死"乐队是"旧金山声音"的典型代表。它的创立人和中心人物是杰里·加西亚（Jerry Garcia，1942～1995），生于旧金山，15岁在中学时学习吉他。60年代初，他被蓝草音乐（Bluegrass Music）所吸引，有时也在咖啡馆里演出这种音乐。1963年，他组织了一个"罐筒"乐队，到1965年已有五人参加，开始用电声乐器演奏。1966年，他们在旧金山的海特-阿什伯利地区与其他人一起过着公社式的生活，给乐队取名?quot;感恩而死"；因受"披头士热"的影响，改而演奏摇滚乐。60年代中期，海特-阿什伯利地区经常举行自由聚会，进行药物试验（acid test），用药者可以进入从错觉到幻觉各种知觉变化状态。伴随着吸毒场面，不可缺少的景象是奇异的穿着和声音很大的摇滚乐。正是在这样的氛围中，"感恩而死"进行了自由的音乐实验。与此同时，他们也经常进行同样的带有实验性的音乐演出。他们的声音越来越大、越来越强劲、有更多的即兴、没有固定的形式，时间也变得更长。他们利用电子手段产生的声音，如反馈、失真、颤音效果等，都受到听众的欢迎。
1966年，"感恩而死"与华纳兄弟（Warner Brother）唱片公司签约，发行了他们第一张专辑《感恩而死》（The Grateful Dead），于1967年获专辑排行榜第73名。他们习惯在与听众交流的情况下，自由自在地在现场演出，而不习惯在录音棚里工作。他们重视现场演出，曾经开过连续演奏5个小时的音乐会、免费音乐会，甚至自己出资50万，带了器材（于1978年）到埃及金字塔下举行义演。
